Although stopping smoking can cause short-term side effects such as reversible weight gain, smoking cessation services and activities are cost-effective because of the positive health benefits. While their manufacturers say they are an alternative for tobacco smokers who want to avoid inhaling smoke, critics say too little is known about the safety of ESDs because they are not regulated. All tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, pose a risk to the health of the user. Beginning smoking, switching to smoking, or reverting to smoking exposes the user to potentially devastating health effects.

E-cigarette companies also take advantage of other marketing outlets, including the internet, retail environments, and recreational venues and events. Researchers in a 2018 study found that cinnamaldehyde (found in cinnamon), o-vanillin (found in vanilla), and pentanedione (found in honey) all had toxic effects on cells. Studies suggest that nicotine-free vaping can irritate the respiratory system, cause cell death, trigger inflammation, and harm blood vessels. The e-liquid comes in a Juul pod or J-pod cartridge, which usually contains nicotine.

While e-cigarette use prevalence has declined significantly since the heyday of JUUL — 10% of high school students reported using e-cigarettes in 2023 — e-cigarette use among young people remains a concern. Their tactics include slick magazine ads, sponsorship of concerts and auto races, celebrity endorsements and sweet, colorful flavors.21 In addition, e-cigarettes are often aggressively placed in convenience stores near candy. Flavors, including mint and menthol, are one of the top reasons young people use e-cigarettes. Candy and fruit-flavored e-liquids can make e-cigarettes appealing and seem harmless. As of July 2020, the sale of flavored e-cigarettes is prohibited in NYC. Further, in 2018, one in 15 (6.7%) middle school students reported using e-cigarettes. E-cigarette use was higher among older students, with one in 11 (9%) seventh grade students reporting use, compared to one in 38 (2.6%) in sixth grade.

Rates of e-cigarette use among Cumberland students aren’t available, but across North Carolina, 21.4% of high school respondents to the state’s 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Survey said they currently vaped. The state’s rates are significantly higher than the national rates of 10% for high schoolers and 4.6% of middle schoolers, according to the National Youth Tobacco Survey. The combo could raise your odds for lung cancer even higher, new research warns. Vapes, vaporizers, vape pens, hookah pens, electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes or e-cigs), e-cigars, and e-pipes are some of the many tobacco product terms used to describe electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS). An electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) is a device that heats up the liquid nicotine and flavoring for you to breathe in. There are many varieties of e-cigarettes that go by different names, including vapes, vape pens or sticks, e-hookahs, hookah sticks, mods and personal vaporizers (PVs). They can also be collectively called electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS).

This is why it took as long as it did for the negative health effects of cigarettes to be widely recognized. There is abundant evidence that e-cigarettes can help some individuals to quit smoking, so they should be more widely recommended as smoking cessation aids. Vaping and smoking share similar negative effects on the body, such as damage to the lungs and increased cancer risk.

These refills are cheaper than disposables, but they're almost as foolproof. Switching from cigarettes to e-cigarettes could also save you a lot of money. Some people spend more than others but in general smoking costs more than vaping. Now there is an option available to me that is far less harmful or offensive as cigarettes and, for now, I am allowed to enjoy the company of my friends and family indoors with the rest of society. No longer do I have to huddle under the awning of a building, trying to avoid the rain, nor do I have to freeze my fingers off trying to rush through a cigarette just so everyone else can be satisfied.

The data shows that in 2021, 69.2 percent of e-cigarette cartridges either sold or given away contained menthol-flavored e-liquids, and the rest were tobacco-flavored. E-cigarette companies also spent $90.6 million more advertising and promoting their products in 2021 than in 2020. Flavored e-cigarettes are very popular, especially among young people.

Children and adults can develop nicotine poisoning from swallowing, breathing, or absorbing e-liquid through their skin or eyes. While secondhand smoke from cigarettes causes serious harm to others, there is no evidence so far that vaping is harmful to people around you and any risks are likely to be very low.

This happens because smoking causes inflammation around the teeth and increases your risk for bacterial infections. The gums may become swollen and bleed (gingivitis) and eventually begin to pull away from the teeth (periodontitis). Smoking also has an effect on insulin, making it more likely that you’ll develop insulin resistance. People who smoke cigarettes have a 30% to 40% greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes and its complications. Smoking can increase the risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma (skin cancer) on the lips.

Other compounds that have been detected in aerosols include acetamide, a potential human carcinogen [5], and some aldehydes [69], although their levels were minimal. Interestingly, the existence of harmful concentrations of diethylene glycol, a known cytotoxic agent, in e-liquid aerosols is contentious with some studies detecting its presence [4, 68, 70,71,72], and others finding low subtoxic concentrations [73, 74]. In this regard, either it was detected at concentrations that did not exceed the authorised limit [73], or it was absent from the aerosols produced [4, 71, 72]. Only one study revealed its presence at high concentration in a very low number of samples [5]. Nevertheless, its presence above 1 mg/g is not allowed by the FDA [73]. Figure 1 lists the main compounds detected in aerosols derived from humectant heating and their potential damaging effects.

The decision lends new credibility to vaping companies’ longstanding claim that their products can help blunt the toll of smoking, which is blamed for 480,000 U.S. deaths annually due to cancer, lung disease and heart disease. E-cigarettes have been sold in the U.S. since 2007 but in recent years their potential benefits for smokers have been overshadowed by their use by adolescents and teens. Vaping nicotine has not been thoroughly evaluated in scientific studies. For now, not enough data exists on the safety of e-cigarettes, how the health effects compare to traditional cigarettes, and if they are helpful for people trying to quit smoking.

During the Vietnam War, cigarettes were included with C-ration meals. In 1975, the U.S. government stopped putting cigarettes in military rations. During the second half of the 20th century, the adverse health effects of tobacco smoking started to become widely known and printed health warnings became common on cigarette packets. This health advisory is being issued by the State Health Officer to inform the public about the alarming statistics on current e-cigarette use among youth in Wisconsin. In Wisconsin, current e-cigarette use among Wisconsin high school students increased 154% between 2014 and 2018.

One study detected vitamin E acetate in the lung fluid of 48 out of 51 EVALI patients sampled across 16 states. By contrast, lung fluid samples taken from healthy people did not contain the vitamin. EVALI is a serious medical condition in which a person’s lungs become damaged from substances contained in e-cigarettes and vaping products. The smoke-free and tobacco-free policies at schools, businesses, healthcare institutions, and other organizations should also cover e-cigarettes. This will help non-users avoid being exposed to potentially harmful e-cigarette aerosol.

Given their relatively recent introduction, there has been little time for a scientific body of evidence to develop on the health effects of e-cigarettes. Notably, the reverse was not true—students who said they smoked cigarettes were no more likely to report use of e-cigarettes when asked approximately 6 months later. Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, are tobacco products that have been sold in the U.S. for about a decade. They include e-pens, e-pipes, e-hookah, and e-cigars, known collectively as ENDS—electronic nicotine delivery systems. They're also sometimes called JUULs, "vapes" and "vape pens." E-cigarettes are the most commonly used tobacco products among kids—and it's become an epidemic. While much remains to be determined about the lasting health consequences of e-cigarettes, there’s evolving evidence about the health risks of e-cigarettes on the lungs—including irreversible lung damage and lung disease.

Nonetheless, adults who smoke who switch to using e-cigarettes expose themselves to potentially serious ongoing health risks. If they are unable to quit e-cigarettes on their own, they should seek help from a health care professional or quitline. Individuals who are not yet able to stop using e-cigarettes should be strongly discouraged from simultaneous, or "dual," use of any combustible tobacco products, including cigarettes. Continuing to smoke exposes the individual to enormous harms, irrespective of whether the individual is using e-cigarettes part of the time. All individuals should also be strongly counseled to not revert to smoking. Some look like a regular cigarette, but many resemble everyday products like pens, USB drives, highlighting markers, or colorful toy-like items.

E-cigarettes contain many of the same cancer-causing chemicals that regular cigarettes do. Nicotine is highly addictive, and most e-cigarettes include it as a main ingredient. The AMA promotes the art and science of medicine and the betterment of public health. The rise of e-cigarettes and vaping has raised concerns that another generation may become dependent on nicotine. The AMA has been a leading force to eliminate public smoking and warn people about the dangers of smoking, including secondhand smoke, since the 1960s.

Cigarette smoking is still the No. 1 cause of preventable death in this country, killing nearly five hundred thousand people each year. (According to some studies, more than half of longtime smokers will die from smoking-related complications.) It’s incredibly hard to stop smoking; people spend lifetimes trying. Around seventy per cent of American smokers say that they want to quit, and for many of them e-cigarettes have been a godsend. But, according to a 2017 study by the C.D.C., about fifty per cent more high schoolers and middle schoolers vape than smoke. Young people have taken a technology that was supposed to help grownups stop smoking and invented a new kind of bad habit, one that they have molded in their own image. The potential public-health benefit of the e-cigarette is being eclipsed by the unsettling prospect of a generation of children who may really love to vape.

Some people believe that e-cigarettes can help them quit smoking tobacco. However, nicotine patches and many other FDA-approved quit aids are available now to help people quit smoking. E-cigarettes are not currently approved by the FDA as aids to help stop smoking.
